Nitecore TM38: Rechargeable LED searchlight delivers 1800 lumens and 1400 meter beam

The Nitecore TM38 (Tiny Monster) is a powerful rechargeable LED flashlight which produces a maximum output of 1800 lumens and a beam throw distance of 1400 meters. This searchlight is definitely designed for outdoor use and would be an asset for the user whose prime objective would be to view objects in the distance. The TM38 would therefore be a welcomed addition to the kit of law enforcement, the military and search and rescue personnel along with the professional caver and hiker.

The TM38 measures 10.94 inches long and has a head diameter of 3.54 inches. The flashlight weighs 44.46 ounces inclusive of the battery pack which powers the light. The TM38 is constructed from an aircraft-grade aluminum alloy which features an HAIII military grade hard-anodized finish and a tripod receptacle which allows the searchlight to be used for area lighting. A sling is included with the TN38 for the convenience of carrying the light slung over your shoulder.

The Nitecore TM38 utilizes a Cree XHP35 HI D4 LED, a PDOT (Precision Digital Optics Technology) reflector and an ultra-clear mineral glass lens with anti-reflective coating. The flashlight is powered by a NBP68 HD ultra-high performance Li-ion rechargeable battery pack. The battery pack can be recharged inside the light via the AC power adapter from the charging port at the side of the TM38 to a mains outlet. The battery pack can also be recharged independently with a Nitecore Adapter. The searchlight can also be powered by at least four rechargeable 18650 Lithium Ion or eight CR123 batteries.

The TM38 features an OLED screen at the side of the head which displays lumen output, brightness level, battery voltage, battery status, remaining runtime and temperature when the light is turned on.. After displaying these readings, the OLED display will be off automatically. To reactivate the OLED press the display switch. To cycle through the information, press the display button repeatedly.

The Nitecore TM38 produces five brightness levels: Turbo 1800 Lumens 4Hr; High 800 Lumens 11Hr; Mid 400 Lumens 22Hr; Low 200 Lumens 40Hr; Eco 50 Lumens 120Hr. Maximum performance is achieved using the Nitecore NBP68 HD battery pack. The searchlight also produces the Strobe, SOS and Location Beacon light modes. The light also features an integrated thermal protection circuit which automatically reduces output to prevent overheating once the temperature has reached 60 degree Celsius.

The TM38 is operated by a two-stage side switch. A power indicator light beneath the switch alerts the user as to the remaining battery power. The searchlight can be operated in Daily or Search Mode depending on how hard the switch is pressed. A halfway press activates Daily Mode and a full press activates Search Mode. When the flashlight is on, press the switch all the way down and release within one second to enter standby mode. In this mode, the light will consume small amounts of power to maintain the settings in the MCU (micro control unit) while appearing to be turned off. When in standby mode the power indicator light will blink once every two seconds to indicate the location of the light. When in standby mode, a single press of the OLED display button will activate the OLED and display battery voltage for ten seconds.

With the light turned off, press the switch halfway and release within one second to enter Daily Mode with constant-on illumination. Alternatively, press and hold the switch halfway for more than one second to activate momentary illumination with the previously used daily mode brightness. With the light turned off, press the switch all the way down and release within one second to enter Search Mode with constant-on illumination. Alternatively, press and hold the switch all the way down for more than one second to activate momentary illumination with maximum brightness.

In Daily Mode, press the switch halfway repeatedly to cycle through brightness levels of Eco, Low, Mid or High. Alternatively, press and hold the switch halfway for more than one second to enter Turbo mode directly. A second halfway press will resume the brightness level last used. The flashlight will turn on the next time in the previously used brightness level. In search mode, press the switch halfway to switch between High and Turbo modes. This mode does not have memory effect.

With the TM38 turned on, press the switch all the way down twice in quick succession to access Strobe mode. When in strobe mode, press the switch halfway repeatedly to cycle through SOS, Location Beacon and Strobe modes. To exit special modes (and enter standby mode), simply press the switch all the way down and release. When in any of the special modes, the OLED display will remain on displaying the specific mode being used.

The Nitecore TM38 has a lock/unlock function to prevent accidental activation of the light. With the search light turned on press and hold the switch all the way down for more than one second until the flashlight is switched off and enters lockout mode. To exit lockout mode, simply press and hold the switch all the way down for more than one second again. In lockout mode, the OLED display will show “LOCK OUT” as a reminder when the switch or the display button is pressed. The TM38 flashlight pack comes with a standard charger adapter, sling, spare O-ring and spare rubber cover for charging port.
