The Fenix FD65 is a solidly built, compact focusing light designed for outdoor use by professionals in the military, law enforcement and search and rescue. The searchlight would also be a handy lighting tool for hikers, campers and cavers. The FD65 features a 1/4’’ threaded interface (Standard tripod socket) which allows for the light to be fitted to a tripod for hands-free lighting to assist in nighttime photography. The Fenix FD65 delivers a maximum output of 3800 lumens and a beam throw distance of 410 meters.
The FD65 measures 152.5mm long and has a body diameter of 50.5mm and a head diameter of 61mm. The flashlight weighs 431 grams without any batteries installed. The FD65 is housed inside an aerospace-grade aluminum casing which features an anti-slip surface and a crenellated bezel for use in emergencies. The FD65 also features a Type III hard-anodized anti-abrasive finish. The flashlight utilizes three Cree XHP35 HI neutral white LEDs and a TIR (Total Internal Reflection) optical focusing lens.
The Fenix FD65 is powered by four 18650 rechargeable Lithium Ion batteries. The flashlight can however operate on only two 18650 batteries which must inserted correctly. Reverse polarity protection guards against incorrect battery insertion. The FD65 also features intelligent overheat protection which causes the flashlight to downshift brightness levels to prevent overheating.
The FD65 is operated by H (High) and L (Low) electronic switches below the head and a focusing ring around the neck of the light. Press and hold either the H or L switches for 0.5 seconds to turn on the flashlight in High or Low. With the light turned on in High, click the H switch to turn up the brightness. With the light turned on in Low, click the L switch to turn down the brightness. Press either switch for 0.5 seconds to turn off the flashlight. Press and hold the H switch for 1.2 seconds to activate Strobe. Press and hold the L switch for 1.2 seconds to activate SOS.
With the FD65 turned on a user can rotate the focusing ring in a counterclockwise direction to focus the light beam gradually into a tight spotlight. Similarly, rotating the focusing ring in a clockwise direction results in the gradual broadening of the flashlight beam into a floodlight.. The Fenix FD65 produces seven brightness levels: Turbo 3800 Lumens 3Hr; High 1200 Lumens 5Hr; Mid 400 Lumens 19Hr 40Min; Low 150 Lumens 40hr 50Min; Eco 50 Lumens 86Hr; Strobe 3800 Lumens; SOS 150 Lumens. The Fenix FD65 flashlight pack contains a holster, lanyard, spare O-ring and user manual.
